On the coast of Rockingham, a suburb of Fremantle, there is a wonderful little island frequented by Blue Penguins, sometimes called Fairy Penguins because of their small size. A nocturnal bird, this island supports ten thousand nesting pairs of these delightful little creatures. The ferry carries visitors over to walk the paths and see a number of ailing birds being nursed back to health at the visitor's centre. Although it was a fall day when I painted this study, a steady stream of people were being ferried back and forth.
